Two Floors of Books, Zero Pretension

St. Charles' beloved independent bookstore on Historic Main Street, where every shelf tells a story worth finding.

About Us

Walk through the door at Main Street Books and the first thing you notice is how the shelves breathe. Books face out, displays invite you to linger, and upstairs the themed tables pull you in directions you never planned to go. That's by design. The staff here actually read what they sell, and it shows in the way a single table can make you rethink an entire genre.

The store spans two full floors at 337 S Main St, tucked into the historic stretch of St. Charles, Missouri that draws visitors from across the region. Downstairs anchors the classics and new releases. Upstairs is where the personality really comes out: rotating thematic displays, framed posters, and the kind of curated browsing experience that big-box stores simply can't manufacture.

With a 4.8-star rating across more than 300 reviews, the praise keeps circling back to the same things: the warmth of the staff, the clever merchandising, and the genuine sense that this place was built for people who love books, not just people who buy them.

What We Offer

Main Street Books stocks a broad range of titles across fiction, nonfiction, history, children's literature, local interest, and gift books, organized by field so browsers and searchers alike can navigate with ease. Beyond books, the shelves hold thoughtfully chosen knick-knacks and gifts that make it easy to leave with something for yourself and someone else.

The two-story layout means there's always something new to discover on a second or third visit. Upstairs displays rotate around specific themes, giving regulars a reason to come back and giving first-timers a genuinely memorable experience. Staff recommendations are posted throughout and are worth taking seriously.

The store is independently owned and listed through IndieLite, supporting the broader network of local bookshops that keep reading culture alive at the neighborhood level. Whether you're hunting a specific title or just want an hour of unhurried browsing on Historic Main Street, this is the stop worth making.

"I love a good bookstore and this is the best I've been to in ages. I love how they organized and merchandised the books. Upstairs there were table or shelf displays on a certain topic. My favorite was the display for mythology across the world. And many of the books on that display were able to be face out so you could see the gorgeous book covers and more easily see what kind of mythology book it was. Obsessed! Can't wait to come back. The stairs to the upper floor are narrow and steep FYI but there is a sturdy railing."

"Cute little bookstore right on Main Street! For the size, it has a plethora of books, and other knick knacks. Two stories, books are organized by field. There are posters upstairs that are really neat to look at. Kind employees, open and airy ambiance. Everywhere you look has something for someone."

"One of the cutest and friendliest book stores I’ve ever visited. The book store is adorable but you can tell the staff love their jobs. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. They carry a good selection of books along with book themed crafts made by peeps who are from Missouri. The staff helped me pick out a great book and I can’t wait to start reading it. If you’re in St. Charles stop by and support a local bookstore. I’m also super excited to wear my new “book nerd” earrings 🥰🥰"

"I'm not sure how they fit so many books in this tiny building but they have a wide range. I specifically enjoy politics and history and within 15 seconds of walking in I found a book I was interested in. Another 2 minutes and I found another. I had to remove myself from the bookstore before I ran my bank account into the red, but I did, somewhat greedily, ask for a pin on the way out. I'll be repping the store in Michigan!"
